It was 1962 when a remarkable idea took shape in Kifissia: to establish a club that would give the area’s young women a platform and a voice through sport. Thus, Zirineios Athletic Club for Young Women (ZAON) was founded—a club destined to write some of the most illustrious chapters in the history of Greek women’s volleyball.
With the historic Zirineio as its home and base, ZAON soon grew from a local club into an unstoppable force on the national stage.
- The Early Years and Establishing a Reputation
From its earliest decades, ZAON stood out for its exemplary organisation and the talent of its players. With an emphasis on youth development and the right mindset, the club began climbing through the divisions, earning respect throughout the Greek sporting community. Kifissia quickly became synonymous with high-quality women’s volleyball.
- The Golden Era and Major Achievements
Years of effort paid off in spectacular fashion. ZAON reached the pinnacle of the sport:
- Greek Champions: Winning the Greek Championship in 1980 and 1981 [1, 2] cemented the club’s dominance.
- European Campaigns: Our players carried Kifissia’s name beyond Greece’s borders, proudly representing the country in European competitions.
- Developing Talent: The club nurtured legendary players who went on to represent Greece on its national teams.
- Revival and the Future
Like every historic team, ZAON faced challenges and difficult periods. Yet the prestige of its jersey and the dedication of the people of Kifissia kept the club standing strong.
With its recent return to the Women’s Volley League, ZAON proved that its championship spirit remains alive. Today, with modern management, a refreshed brand and thriving academies, we look to the future with complete optimism.
